Roblox is a diverse platform where millions of users of all ages come to create, play, and connect. To help create a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone, especially our younger users, Roblox employs various age checks across the platform.
What is an age check?
Age check is a process designed to evaluate a user’s age. This creates a more customized and safer experience on Roblox and access to age-appropriate games and features. Currently, all chat, Restricted Content, chat without filters with trusted friends, and collaboration using TeamCreate in Studio require age checks. Over time, more features will be added that utilize age checks.
Once you complete an age check, you will soon have access to games and features based on your age group.
We understand that it may take users some time to go through the age check process, so we’re providing a transition period in most regions for games access only. Access to features also depends on your account settings and region.
| Age Group | Content Access | Features |
| Under 9 | Roblox Kids | You can play games rated for your age. You’ll need your parent to allow chat with people in similar age groups or Trusted Friends via Settings > Privacy & content restrictions > Communication. |
| 9 - 12 | Roblox Select | You can play games rated for your age and chat with people in similar age groups or Trusted Friends (with parental permission). |
| 13 - 15 | Roblox Select | You can play games rated for your age, chat with people in similar age groups or Trusted Friends, and access more features. |
| 16 - 17 | Roblox | You can play all games except those rated 18+. You can also chat with people in similar age groups and Trusted Friends and access more features. |
| 18+ | Roblox | You have full access to Roblox games and features. |
To successfully complete an age check, users can complete one of the following methods:
- Facial age estimation
- ID verification
Do I need to age check more than once?
If you’ve completed an age check and we detect a discrepancy with your estimated age, you may be prompted to complete an age check again.
ID verification is only available to users 13 and above.
Facial age estimation
We estimate your age by analyzing images and video of your face and examining your facial features. We delete your images and video after processing for facial age estimation. Your estimated age helps place you in the appropriate age group (5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20, and 21+) to customize your experience on Roblox. If you are placed in the 5-8 or 9-12 age group based on facial age estimation, certain personal data, including your email and phone number, will be removed from Roblox. Learn more in our Help Center article, How does Roblox estimate my age?.
Note: In specific regions, parental approval is required to complete facial age estimation.
If you believe your age was incorrectly estimated, you can verify your birthday using an ID.
- If your account age is over 13, go to Settings, then Account info, and select Continue with ID.
- If your account age is under 13, go to Settings, then Account info, and click the pencil icon next to your birthday to change your birthday.
Changing your age
Alternatively, if you are under 18 and would like to change your birthday after facial age estimation, a linked parent can update the birthday on your account. Parents can only modify their child’s birthday once.
If you made a mistake and your age is checked to an 18+ age group, you can undo your age checked status by following the steps listed in our Help Center article, How do I change my age?.
If you self-report as over 13 but are estimated as under 13, a 48-hour grace period applies before your age group is officially updated. You can manually accept the age outcome to skip this wait. Learn more in our Help Center article, How do I change my age?.
If we’re unable to estimate your age via facial age estimation, you’ll need to complete ID verification.
In certain regions, users may require parental consent to complete age estimation.
ID verification
You can verify your birthday on Roblox using a government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license, passport, or residency card). You must be at least 13 years old to use this option. Once your ID is verified, this status can only be undone once per account. Please be sure to use your own official document during the verification process. Our customer support team cannot manually verify IDs, remove existing verifications, or update your account settings. Learn more in our Help Center article, ID Verification FAQs.
